Stirling Soaps Mutton Tallow Line
The Mutton Tallow base from Stirling Soap Company is inexpensive and amazing. It's even better than their popular beef tallow base.
However, the "funk" of the sheep tallow base only works with certain scents. Here are the ones I've tried, which is most of them, and my take.
Note that sheep tallow prices are rising, so this soap base could get put on pause, or phased out entirely if the cost gets too much.
Non-Sheep Scents
Glastonbury
This scent is a little more easy-going, so I could shave with this one frequently and not get tired of it. I like it a lot.
If you like patchouli, then you should try it.
Stirling: "spa-like blend of Patchouli, Lavender, Oakmoss, Lichen, Frankincense, and Vetiver"
Port-au-Prince
This one is kinda strong, like Varen, so I don't always turn to it, but when I'm in the mood, it really hits the spot.
This is a scent that I originally did not buy because the splash was not enjoyable to me due to its intensity and that vetiver and lemongrass are not my favorites. However, in shaving soap form, it's not as strong, and I do really enjoy it in that medium.
Stirling: "Earthy, grassy, and pungently sweet Haitian Vetiver combined with a small but uplifting kick of Lemongrass."
Varen
This is a rarity for Stirling. It's an original scent that Stirling developed with a Dutch user group. Sometimes it is only available seasonally.
I don't like this one all of the time, but most of the time I could wear it and be very happy.
Stirling: "This natural fougere is a powerful blend of oakmoss, lavender, coumarin, vetiver, sage, cedar, lichen, and geranium."
Sheep-Named Scents
Electric Sheep
I have a sample of this one, but since I don't like citronella and eucalyptus all that much, I don't know if I will ever try it.
Scots Pine Sheep
Pine scent that's pretty nice. Of the ones with "sheep" in the name, this is my favorite.
And no, to me it does not smell enough like the popular pine-scented floor cleaner to make it seem odd or too overdone.
Sheep
This one is light, with all the top performance of the mutton base.
Stirling says it's unscented, but I get a light, laundry, linen kind of feel when I use it.
